The Importance of Setting Up Properly Before Launching Your Store

So, you’ve decided to upgrade your hobby into a potential stream of additional revenue—or maybe even your primary source of income. With that first hurdle behind you comes what might be the most challenging part—the setup.

When I say setup, I’m not just talking about a website or your social media presence—though those are important and will be something to focus on. I’m talking about preparing your space and mindset so that you’re ready to sell. Your journey as a business owner, no matter how big or small, is your story. Be prepared to share it. That story is the foundation of your connection with potential clients, which can encourage them to choose you over someone else.

Why did you open your store? What motivates you to keep creating? What drives you to keep going and actively put yourself out there?

These are the kinds of questions worth answering as you start taking pictures and recording videos of your projects. When you add these personal touches—your story—they form your brand. This is what will ultimately set you apart from other businesses, and it’s what can help guide your direction as you move forward.

As mentioned, a website and social media will be part of your pre-launch checklist. But putting yourself out there in a more personal and human way is just as important. Luckily—or maybe unluckily—people are curious. We like to know the person behind the product. We want to know who we’re supporting.

What sets you apart from the crowd? What’s your story?

These questions require some reflection. Are you ready to put yourself out there? If not—and that’s perfectly okay—then consider how you might still humanize your business. Give your store a soul. Let it be more than just a transaction, more than a static building or a flat process that begins with a purchase and ends with a delivery.

Let me share a little about my story—Everything by Kathleen. It’s simple. I’m a self-proclaimed jack-of-all-trades. I know how to do a little bit of everything, though I wouldn’t call myself a master at any one thing. I love to try new things and put my spin on them. I often find inspiration in everyday life and love to turn those sparks into projects. I’ve built fences, tackled plumbing projects, and even rewired my home. But trying my hand at what we broadly call ‘arts and crafts’ has brought me more challenges—and more pride—than I can count. The process, the creativity, the setbacks and successes… I love it all. And most of all, I love sharing these experiences with others.

So, what’s your most incredible pride and joy? Have you ever tackled a project that you didn’t think you could complete—and then surprised yourself?

These kinds of moments make you relatable. They build trust. They make your business memorable.
